Core Knowledge

The Core Knowledge movement is an education reform based on the ideas of E.D. Hirsch, Jr. first expressed in Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know (1987) and The Schools We Need and Why We Don't Have Them (1996).

Core Knowledge is built on the premise that a grade-by-grade core of common learning is necessary to ensure a sound and fair elementary education. The curriculum is result of research into the content and structure of the highest performing elementary school systems around the world, as well as extensive consensus building among diverse groups and interests, including parents, teachers, scientists, professional curriculum organizations, and experts on multicultural traditions. This curriculum framework, which we blend with state content standards, provides a solid, sequenced, specific, and shared core curriculum that enables students to establish a strong foundation of knowledge.
